My Missing Piece

To my Grandpa,

“Grandpa, even though you're no longer here, your spirit still guides me in every idea, every photograph, every piece of my work. You put me on this path and still, you are my muse. Your thoughts and wisdom carried me through college and helped shape the person and artist I am today. In every creation, I carry a piece of you with me, forever my inspiration. And now I dedicate my undergrade senior series to you, my missing piece.”

Grandpa’s Puzzles, My Missing Piece is a heartfelt tribute to my grandfather, capturing the quiet moments of connection and love we shared. Through photographs of some of his favorite things, like a weathered wooden boat on the water and the simple joy of a sweet treat, this series reflects his gentle spirit and deep appreciation for life’s small pleasures. These images are more than just snapshots; they are fragmented pieces of a larger story, symbolizing how memories, much like the puzzles we once worked on together, are often incomplete.

By transforming these photographs into puzzles, I aim to mirror the fragmented nature of memory itself—how it leaves gaps that we must learn to fill, piece by piece. Grandpa’s Puzzles invites viewers to reflect on the meaningful fragments of their own lives, the small moments that connect us to the people we love. It is both a remembrance of my grandfather and an exploration of the process of remembering—of piecing together love, loss, and the sense of wholeness that we find in the fragments we hold dear.
